The skill of the practice is to notice and experience the difference between movement and action; or action and reaction. This involvement of a 'reflective consciousness' is how yoga becomes life changing.

As we move the body into new and different shapes we challenge our awareness. This process grows new connections within our brain. We improve the link between the mind and the body and the sense of ourselves within our environment. In creating a more conscious connection with the moment of life that we are in, we become calm.  The only place we really live life is in moment.. we know this deep down and when our actions arise from being present, the actions are an expression of our committment to live.   A lovely budhist phrase is "I am arising only.. this is all".  Yoga is a practice that imprints the importance of stability, support, stillness and silence.  When these signals are are strengthened, they guide us intuitively.
