The benefits of yoga for children and teens

Age 5-8 years

At this age children are curious learners and love to learn from doing and play. They are fun, lively, imaginative, creative, entertaining and engaging and we use music, songs and their colourful imaginations to explore poses, breath work and some yoga philosophy, with a focus on the benefit this work will bring to the child.  This age group is fantastic for the beginning process of a deep inward journey and we begin the term with a short relaxation time, which is extended as the term progresses. We create a safe, inclusive and non-competitive environment to teach the tools for dealing with emotional upsets and mind chatter.

Age 8 -12 years

At this delightful age children are still enthusiastic learners and want to give everything a go. It is a very open age group and we provide a conducive environment to teach core yogic principles and more detailed postures.  Children are challenged by the more detailed postures as at this age they start to doubt themselves and compare themselves to others. We ensure to create a solid, safe and non-competitive, everyone is perfect environment using lots of positive reinforcement to build self-esteem and confidence.  We switch between fun and serious, starting the class with a short discussion about the topic of the day. Children at this age have amazing insight into worldly affairs as well as their own emotions and they participate enthusiastically in the discussions, including exploring options of managing emotional upsets.  We continue the process of a deep inward journey through breath work and relaxation using visual imagery.

Age 13-15 years

At this age of ‘almost grown up’ young people are at the stage of questioning everything and looking for answers to things that don’t make sense anymore. Our focus in teaching this age group is on physical work with a focus on the positive things they can do for their physical health, incorporating back strengthening, belly toning and core strength exercises.  We teach techniques to de-stress, handle their emotions and for getting a good night’s sleep. The classes are adapted to the need of the students depending on what is happening in their life at the time, eg exams. Classes incorporate reflection time on breathing and relaxation work, with group discussion on when, how and why certain practices invoke the parasympathetic nervous system to bring balance and harmony. The emphasis is on personal development, not competition, and they explore and extend their capabilities as their confidence in themselves grows.
